Smooth installs cement board for tile substrate applications in residential and commercial projects throughout the Boston area. Properly installed cement board — with alkali-resistant mesh tape at joints and appropriate fastening — provides a tile installation that will last for decades without the moisture failures common to improperly substrate-prepared installations.

Key Benefits

Fully waterproof

Unaffected by water — will not swell, delaminate, or lose structural integrity when wet

Dimensionally stable

Does not expand or contract with moisture changes — prevents tile cracking and grout failure

Industry standard for tile

Accepted by all major tile manufacturers for wet area installations

Exterior applications

Appropriate substrate for EIFS, stucco, and exterior tile systems

Our Process

Surface Preparation

Framing checked for flatness and rigidity. Shimmed where needed.

Board Installation

Cement board installed with appropriate fastener type and spacing. Offsets at joints.

Joint Treatment

Alkali-resistant mesh tape embedded in thin-set at all joints.

Waterproofing

Appropriate waterproofing membrane applied before tile where required.

FAQ

Hardiebacker, Durock, and Wonderboard are all suitable. The critical factor is proper waterproofing membrane application over the substrate — the cement board alone is not a waterproofing layer.
For above-counter backsplashes, cement board is recommended but not strictly required for tile. For areas regularly exposed to water (behind a sink), it is strongly recommended.
